Me? More than once.
On one hand, I get that we’re in a field where oral advocacy is valued so it makes sense to get comments on one’s speech…. But “articulate” 🧐.. we couldn’t think of any other superlative here?? Is “articulate”
even a superlative?? To me it’s the equivalent of calling someone literate. Like, eloquent was right there.
The first couple of times
I heard it in my career I brushed it off but now after hearing it during my yearly review I’m really curious. AIO here? Is this just a common way for lawyers to describe other lawyers??
EDIT TO ADD: Yes, I am Black. I purposely didn’t add it to my post because despite popular belief, most of us do not want to assume that everything is always racism. But given then heaviness of the word of course it does cross my mind. Reading these comments, I’m going to stick with my initial reaction and take it as a compliment within the field. Someone compared it to the word succinct, and that makes much more sense to me.
Sn: stop acting like going through someone’s post history is some type of invasion of privacy. We’re lawyers, we of all people should understand that ur public post history has absolutely no expectation of privacy 🙄
UPDATE: just wanted to thank everyone for all the feedback and support. The consensus seems to be that it was a micro aggression, even if well intentioned. Fortunately, I don’t work with the reviewing partner and honestly this is the most respected I’ve felt at a firm in my entire 8 year career so I’m staying.
