Are you replaying cRPGs?

When I was a kid, I was replaying my favourite games. I played Arcanum 4 times, Baldur's Gate 3 times, Fallout at least 2 times... I was excited with making different character, team, choices and watching how it influences the story.

Nowadays when I buy some non-linear, choice-rich game I am thinking "oh, I will play it at least few times to see more branches!"... But after one gameplay I take interest in the different game.

Do Black Templars hate Ogryns?

Black Templars are so crazy purist that they hate even the sanctioned abhumans, like when they saved bunch of civilians from orks, just to kill them because they were taller than average humans. What about Ogryns? They are probably the most accepted abhumans, they most spread, and the most serving in military, so there is the biggest chance for BT to interact with them,

Hero Quest - first (kind of) cRPG I have played

Hero Quest on Amiga 600 was one of my favourite games as a kid. And it is important for me for many reasons:

  1. You could play it with friends - and every guy could control hiw own character.
  2. It was my first game where story kinda mattered - well, it existed mostly as an intro and mission briefings, but still.
  3. It was my first proto-RPG.
  4. It was my first game with quite dark setting.

This game had big influence on me and my interest in dark fantasy/horror and cRPG/TTRPG. I never played board game version but still it has special place in my mind.

Something more about Enuncia?

So... there is actually different kind of magic, not related to the Warp sorcery?

I am looking for playtesters of the interactive fiction dark fantasy (no promotion here!)

(This is not promotion, I am not giving link to the game or even its name, I am not directing people to my content in any way, just looking for a help).

My content is an interactive fiction story/text-based game in which the player takes on the role of a Sauron-style Lord/Lady of Darkness with the goal of conquering the world. (S)he will carry out his plans by making various decisions. (S)he will build his army and send it into battles, weave intrigues and deceptions, create secret spy networks and sectarian cults, recruit agents and commanders, corrupt representatives of Free Peoples and sow discord among them, collect magical artifacts and perform sinister plots. Note – one playthrough/reading takes about 1 hour, but the premise is that the game can be approached several times, each time making different decisions, getting different results and discovering something new.

I am looking for the people eager in participate in testing of the new, unpublished version, with plenty of new content. This is not difficult or time-wasting - it would be OK if You play this version at least once (which takes max. 1,5 hour) and send me Your opinion plus info about the bugs if You see anyone. If You want to participate in test, please let me know.

true horror of existence

Yes, you are irrelevant... but it is not about size. Universe doesn;t care about you? Well, you doesn't care about the 99,(9) of the universe too. What matters to you is wellbeing of you, your loved ones, maybe humanity ifn general... Universe doesn;t care about them, but you do not care about universe's opinion.

But true horror is that you actually cannot act for that wellbeing in any meaningifull way. You are deluding yourself that you can know consequences of your actions and that some actions are obviously beneficial and some are not... But that's delusion. Absolutely every action is connected to so many factors, that it is absolutely impossible to know its results.

Let's take some "obviously" morally good action. You rescue a baby from being murdered. Congratulations, you just saved future mass murderer!

In the morning, you talked 3 minutes with your wife about how much .you love her. Congratulations, thanks to it she will leave the house just in time to be killed by the drunk driver! You killed her with your kindness! It would be much better for her if you had not talk with her... or if you talked with her about how stupid she is for 3 minutes 10 seconds instead.

And no, you will never know. Even if you are supergenius who can analyze results of your action for 1000 years in future, than you cannot know if in the year 1001 all of good brought by them will not be undone and they will actually cause great evil instead.

Why are mathematicians going crazy?

(Here is video version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHnrYCqlv9k )

Mathematics is a language that humans use to describe reality and the universe. But if the nature of reality is shocking in cosmic horror, the logical conclusion is that studying it can lead to madness. Here are some viable candidates for „scholars who looked into the abyss, and the abyss looked into them.”

Kurt Gödel (1906-1978) – Austrian-American mathematician, physicist and philosopher. He dealt with, among others, theory of relativity (which in itself negates the image of the world that „common sense” dictates to us), deriving from it equations intended to prove the possibility of time travel. Towards the end of his life he went crazy, among other things. believing someone was trying to poison him. When his wife was hospitalized for a long time and was unable to taste his meals to prove the lack of poison, Gödel starved himself to death.

Georg Cantor (1845-1918) – German mathematician, creator of set theory. Over time, he delved deeper into mysticism and claimed that mathematics could be used to reach conclusions about metaphysics. Some Christian (Cantor himself considered himself a devout Christian) philosophers of his time claimed that Cantor’s mathematical theories were contrary to religious dogmas (it was something about proving the existence of an infinite being, other than God – I am not a mathematician, I don’t really understand what is going on). Cantor was tormented by bouts of depression, sometimes so severe that they led to hospitalization.

Ludwig Boltzmann (1844-1906) – Austrian physicist, pioneer of the kinetic theory of gases. He theorized the “Boltzmann brain” – a hypothetical self-aware entity that emerges from chaos through random fluctuations. Boltzmann proposed that we and our observed low-entropy world arose from a random fluctuation in a higher-entropy universe. He committed suicide by hanging. „If our current level of organization, having many self-aware entities, is the result of random fluctuation, and it is much less likely to be so than a level of organization that produces only self-aware self-aware entities, then in any universe with the level of organization we see, there should be a huge number of solitary Boltzmann brains floating in unrecognized environments. In an infinite universe, the number of self-aware brains spontaneously, randomly emerging from chaos, along with false memories of life like ours, should far outweigh the number of real brains evolved in the observable universe, arising from unimaginably rare fluctuations”. Did I understand it? Not really, but it sounds quite Lovecraftian – self-aware beings emerging from chaos, our world as a result of random processes taking place in the „higher” universe… it’s easy to spin a cosmic horror out of it. And let's theorize that Boltzmann’s suicide was due to the terrifying conclusions he had reached…

Paul Ehrenfest (1880-1930) – Austrian-Dutch physicist. He researched the theory of relativity (which, as I mentioned, very often leads to „crazy” conclusions about the nature of reality) and laid the foundations for quantum physics (which is even crazier). Towards the end of his life, he fell into severe depression and shot first his son and then himself.

Grigory Perelman (1966) – the only still living member of this group, a Russian mathematician. He had a brilliant career in Russia and the USA. His greatest achievement was presenting evidence for the so-called Poincaré’s hypothesis regarding the shape of the universe. Unexpectedly, in 2005 he left his job and broke off all contacts with the scientific community… And not only that – he stopped leaving his apartment, communicating only by phone or through the door. He consistently rejects all job offers and awards (including the Millennium Award worth one million dollars!).
