Easy ways to remove these square body clips without breaking them?

I've been carelessly breaking these for years and replacing them with the regular circular plastic body clips.

Does anyone know the exact setup in "The Chess Players" painting?

In that painting, a man is playing chess against the Devil for his soul. He appears hopeless, believing he is in checkmate. However, it’s said that a famous chess master later examined the scene and pointed out that the man was not actually losing and might even have a winning position. Due to the confusing figures it's pretty difficult to interpret, I can’t clearly read the board. Does anyone have an idea of what the exact layout might be?
