Switching to a completely different major

Currently im finishing up my Fashion Design associates degree in nyc however i know for my bachelors i wanna do something more stem related. Originally I was gonna switch to textile development but my in state school provided options for material science & engineering or mechanical engineering. (Ik its not the same but they are both degrees i was looking into) Is that too much of a jump from fashion design? Would I even be able to combine fashion and engineering into a career?

The pros of switching is that ill be in a in state school vs out of state and would be able to get scholarships.

The con is that ill need to basically take a year off to complete all the prerequisites.

So basically

  1. Would switching not only majors but school and taking about 2 semesters off be worth it overall or am I putting my college carry at risk?

  2. In terms of using my degree would mechanical engineering offer more stability than materials science?
