Vintage 'Media Watch' (1994): A newspaper editor accused the ABC of promoting "homosexual lifestyles" while simultaneously running ads for male escorts

Back in 1994, the ABC was the first TV network to broadcast Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. It attracted the ire of then Wagga Daily Advertiser editor Michael McCormack who accused the ABC of promoting “homosexual lifestyles”.

McCormack later switched from a career in journalism to politics and went on to serve as the deputy prime minister of Australia and leader of the National Party from 2018 – 2021.

In 2017, McCormack said that his views had changed. “I have grown and learned not only to tolerate but to accept all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, or any other trait or feature which makes each of us different and unique,” he said.

We asked professional astronomer Alan Duffy, who said it was "absolutely an aeroplane contrail." He went on to say: "Looking closely, you can see that the trail is actually two parts coming from each side of the plane. Note that the setting sun is also perfectly aligned to reflect from that contrail, making it very apparent." Nine News has since deleted the video across its websites, a spokesperson telling The Guardian, “Thanks for flagging this ... The story has been taken down.”
