I’m the builder of Multiverse AI, an AI character chat app focused on user-created characters and character sharing.

The main idea was to move beyond a fixed list of bots and let users create their own personalities, publish them, and let other users interact with them. The interesting challenge was not just “make a chatbot,” but designing a system where characters feel distinct enough from each other while still staying usable in longer conversations.

A few things I learned while building it:

• Character quality depends heavily on how well the persona definition is structured. Small changes in tone, boundaries, or style instructions can completely change how consistent a character feels.
• Sharing characters creates a discovery problem, not just a generation problem. A lot of effort goes into making characters reusable by others, not only personal/private.
• Conversation quality can degrade when a character becomes too vague or overloaded with traits, so simpler definitions often perform better.
• Safety/moderation is also harder once users can create their own characters, since you need to think about both generated replies and user-defined setups.

Current limitations:

• Characters are still better at style/personality consistency than deep long-term memory.
• Some character setups work much better than others depending on how they are written.
• This is still evolving, especially around discovery and consistency.
