Can the Heartless kill someone and not turn them into a heartless?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I got curious about something.

Are the heartless capable of just straight up killing another person without making them into a Heartless? You got alot of heartless with fire, ice, and magic spells, swords, guns, and even a heartless that's a Car. I wouldn't imagine losing your heart to darkness would be the only possible outcome of having an encounter with these enemies.

Same with Nobodies, Unversed and Dream Eaters. What happens if they defeat someone? Do they also lose their heart or are they straight up dead?

I could very well just be overthinking this or maybe this was explained in the Reports somewhere but I'm curious if it was ever address at all in the games or by Nomura.
