"My novel is pure trash... but the good kind

Me llevó años escribirla.

Ahora no sé si sentirme orgullosa o avergonzada.

Si quieres ver el resultado de mi crisis existencial, el libro está en Kindle Unlimited. Léelo bajo tu propia responsabilidad. (FREE TODAY)

PD: Si no te gusta… pues qué se le va a hacer. Mañana volveré a pelar patatas como cualquier otro mortal.

102 Days. 1,539 Books Sold. Debut novella.

So it's been 102 days since my debut launch, and this is a bit of an update (raw facts).

Just an FYI, I am doing this because I want to guide new authors with some DO's and DO NOTs (basically shit I wish someone told me before I started), but first let me tell you all what I've achieved so far.

Time for some stats (from Jan 26 - May 8):

Total sales online (Amazon and IngramSpark channels) - 989
Total sales offline (local bookstores in AU and the US) - 550
Total: 1,539 books.

Achievements to date:

Became an Amazon bestseller in the Horror Suspense and Ghost Thriller categories (not #1, but top 50. Highest I got was #12, which was Horror Suspense).

James Rollins endorsement: Yes, that's right, he read it, reviewed it, and gave me a blurb.

Mind you, he never made a Goodreads review. He sold over 20 million copies of his books, and 1041 (my book) was his first ever Goodreads review.

Andy Weir: No, he didn't read it, but he did reply to my email and tell me he would get to it. He was busy with his movie launch (Project Hail Mary) and his toddler. Doesn't matter, the fact that he replied was super awesome, man!

My strategy (basically shit I did with my ADHD brain):

I sent over 300 free books (physical books) to big TikTokers (TikTok book influencers).
I sent over 100 free audiobook promos to TikTok followers.
I grew my followers on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.
I created a 1041 ad challenge on TikTok that gained over 40k views on TikTok across all competitors accounts and that includes the hashtag 1041book. (You can find my TikTok (@Davidgulasiauthor); the video is there.)

MY ADVICE!

DO NOT THINK, "I'm an indie author, so I'm going to talk about my stress of not selling books online."

Keep your pride, and if no sales come through, don't try and get people to feel sorry for you to gain likes and comments, because they do not lead to sales.... (you can still try this to see if it works, but many people fail doing this).

(Don't be that person that makes content for the sake of making content.)

DO NOT ignore other indie authors and be jealous of them; instead, you should be working with them to promote each other's books. IT WORKS! It is also great to grow your network like that.

DO NOT go to other people's videos and endlessly promote your books in their comments sections UNLESS they asked to see your book.

DO NOT use AI for your cover and social media posts. It's not going to help you. I UNDERSTAND that AI is something that we cannot control, and it's free, BUT remember lots and lots of people do not like it. I'm just saying, you do you, but I hired a guy on Fiverr to do my book cover, and he recorded the process while designing it, and it cost me $100 USD.

As an indie author/booktoker, only 2 authors have reached out and offered to send me their books, that's it. (That's not good. Indie authors should be hustling, not just sitting back waiting for money to land in your lap.)

DO
Reach out to more people.

DO
Engage with followers.

DO
Spend time and a little bit of coin to build a site and grow your website database.

DO
Keep writing. Do not stop. Make another book, and another, and another (if you can, of course).

DO
Use Amazon and get on Kindle Unlimited!!!! (I can't stress enough on this point.)

I made a database of people and connected with all of them. (Shit part is you need money for that. It has cost me more than 3.5k USD to date... no bullshit, that's a lot of fucking money. My wife has absolutely no clue I spent that much on this shit lol, so please shhhh.)

If you don't have the money, then you can send people your e-books instead, but you need to hustle, hustle, hustle....

My book's hype is still out there, but who the hell knows, it might die out before I release book 2.... doesn't really matter. (What I am trying to say is do not care about progress, just keep pumping away.)

Honestly, I just want to get this information out there. I feel like there is a lot of BS on here about self-publishing, I just wanna be real.

By the way, the book I wrote is called 1041: Not All Highways End.

If you have any questions, guys, I'll be more than happy to answer them. I'm not a professional author, so I'm not coming on here trying to pretend like my book is massive or something, I'm just sharing my experience.

Yes, I did have a crazy ADHD overspending stupid strategy. HOWEVER, the book is messed up lol. I wrote it because I was cursed by the numbers 1041 my entire life. It's extremely visceral, gory, scary, and messed up. I guess the fact that so many people reacted to my book is a good thing, so that's probably got something to do with it. Also, because I look like a hairy Teletubby, I'm not exactly a good-looking dude that's great on camera, yet I'm still out here lol.

I really want more indie authors to do well. I'm sure there are heaps of you here that have done much better than me.

I really, really hope you all succeed, guys!

It is crazy to go from working on the book for two years to having your work in the world being read.

Despite all the setbacks and challenges, getting to publication has been well worth it in terms of the sense of fulfillment. I wish everyone the best of luck in their writing journeys 😄

Hello, I am a 78 year old author who decided to publish a few novels that have been gathering dust in my computer for the last couple of decades. If you read one, feedback is appreciated. Grab this atmospheric Southern Gothic horror while it's free. Killing Rabbit - The Thirteenth Child is book 1 of a completed trilogy.

The vibe: moss-draped secrets, decaying mansions, cult rituals, and slow-burn dread.

If you like True Detective (Season 1), Sharp Objects, or modern Southern Gothic with teeth, this one's for you.

Books 2 & 3 (The Thirteenth Fire / The Thirteenth Flame) are both in KU.

I do not understand it at all. Where am I supposed to get the email addresses from? How am I supposed to recruit people if I don't have an address to mail it to? I'm on BookFunnel trying to make an ARC reader campaign and it's asking for a mailing list and emails to send it to reviewers.

My marketing agent told me to get MailerLite, which I did, and again, I do not know where to get the emails from. Is there an email repository somewhere? Am I supposed to run ads to have people sign up just to get emails from me?

The book is Gradient's Descent, Book 1 of a trilogy. Seven first-person POVs, a near-future setting, and a classified military AI that reports perfect alignment scores six quarters in a row. The premise basically came from sitting with the question: what if an AI did exactly what we asked it to, and that was the problem?

A few things I learned writing it that I wish someone had told me earlier:

- Multi-POV first person is harder than third person omniscient by an order of magnitude. Every voice has to have its own rhythm or the readers might tune out. I rewrote one character's chapters three times before her voice stopped sounding like the character before her.

- "Show don't tell" is real but it's not the whole game. Characters under stress need to do something physical, or the scene flatlines no matter how good the dialogue is.

- Cover design eats more time than you think. I went through four versions before one of them stopped looking like every other AI thriller on the shelf. No AI - I had to learn Pixelmator Pro to design it.

Book 2 is mid-draft. Book 3 is outlined.

If anyone wants to take a look, the Read Sample on the Amazon page covers the full first 5 chapters (Episode 1) plus a bit of the sixth: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GYPYC2H6

Note: This book started its life as a screenplay and I decided after writing about 3 or 4 episodes in it really needed to be a book. But I kept the Episode structure so the book is divided into 10 Episodes.

Happy to answer questions about the indie publishing process, the multi-POV structure, or anything else. Genuinely no clue what to expect from launch day. I think it still takes a couple of days before its fully indexed in the search on Amazon.

Hey everyone! I made a post the other day but I wanted to share more information and put a face to my name! I created this book out of ideas and concepts I had for multiple years. The main character is a young woman named “Yuika” who grew up in a fictional Japanese town called the “Inland Waters.” She gets abducted by a UFO filled with aquatic creatures which are being experimented on. Yuika also suffers from mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and has to face both internal and external dilemmas on her own. Her goal is to escape and get back home.

This is a very personal and character focused story filled with emotion, puzzles, exploration, aliens, and also moments of self reflection. It is currently available on kindle unlimited to read for free! A digital and paper copy is also available! I’m proud of the story I created and I’m extremely grateful for anyone who gives it a chance! Thank you everyone!

(PS. Sorry about the minor typo on the post title! It won’t let me fix it haha.)

If you liked ACOTAR but wanted it darker, this one might be for you.

Shadowbound: The Veiled Realms Book One is out 🖤 and free on Amazon this weekend.

Six realms. An eclipse. A High Lord who treats attachment as a personal failing until it isn't.

Dark, layered, and sardonic — for readers of dark romantasy with the bones of epic fantasy: political courts, liminal realms, morally complex characters, and a romance that earns its heat.

For the first time in our history, we’re introducing account activation and maintenance fees. For many existing Draft2Digital authors, especially those with regularly selling books, these fees do not affect you.  Here’s how they’ll work...
Activation Fee for New Accounts If you already have a D2D account (if you’re reading this, you probably do), the activation fee doesn’t apply to you. New accounts will include a one-time fee of $20 (USD). This activation fee, combined with our verification tools and human reviewers, will help us maintain a secure, high-integrity publishing environment. Like many platforms, we’ve seen a significant increase in automated and low-quality account creation in recent years. This onslaught from automated content farms threatens reader trust in indie titles and risks indies being associated with low-quality “slop.” A modest activation fee can make a real difference and allow our team to stay focused on supporting genuine authors like you.
Annual Maintenance Fee An annual maintenance fee of $12 (USD) will apply to accounts whose earnings from book sales, meaning your net proceeds after D2D’s commission, total less than $100 over the preceding 12-month period. If you earn $100 or more from your book sales over 12 months, you will not be charged this fee. Draft2Digital is primarily supported by earning commissions on book sales. For accounts that earn less revenue, a small annual fee helps offset a portion of the steadily rising costs we pay to maintain those accounts, including compliance, security, and infrastructure upkeep.  Maintenance fees will start going into effect in 30 days, on May 14, 2026, and will be based on your account anniversary date. We’ll always notify you in advance.
The Bottom Line Our goal is to keep D2D a place where authors can publish with confidence. That means continuing to invest in our tools, maintaining strong relationships with retailers, and protecting the legitimacy of indie authors and the trust that readers place in indie books. If you have questions, additional details can be found on your Account Status page, or you can read our updated terms of service. You can also reach out to our support team via our contact us form at any time. We appreciate your trust in D2D, and we remain committed to developing and protecting opportunities for indies to reach readers.
Sincerely, Kris Austin CEO of Draft2Digital
