Derailleur barrel adjuster threads problem

Hi,
I recently purchased my first used road bike, and it had some issues with shifting. So I decided to try adjusting the limit screws and indexing myself. But when I started unscrewing the rear derailleur barrel adjuster, it came out completely. I loosened the cable tension and tried to put it back, but it wouldn’t go in correctly.

When I inspected it more closely, I saw that the threads at the beginning of the screw were damaged (as shown in the picture, one thread is also split). I don’t know if I accidentally cross-threaded it, if my friend did during our first ride yesterday (when he quickly showed me how to adjust it), or if I bought it like that.

My question is whether I should try to fix it myself (I have a tap set at home, shown in the photo), or if I should just take it to a bike shop and let them deal with it. Has anyone else had a similar problem and fixed it at home? What are your recommendations?
