Basically: the protagonist of my story (16M) starts off incredibly passive. He's more or less floating through his life, trying and failing to quit SH as he deals with undiagnosed depression, unrecognized trauma and abusive parents. Almost everything he does he does only at the prompting of his two best friends.

A few chapters in, after exploring how he floats at the edges of his relationships and just reacts to things going on around him, he's assigned a research project about his family tree. His friends find a book for him so he has somewhere to start from and, while he's reluctant, he starts reading it. He finds odd gaps in the info and, when his father seems avoidant to his questions, his fatal flaw (insatiable curiosity) kicks in and he's sent down a research rabbit hole. He's now actively seeking out information, seeking people out for help or information, forming plans with others to steal municipal property, stuff like that.

I really feel that both vibes are important, and that the juxtaposition between the two represents how depression and ADHD can bounce off and conflict with each other. But I also worry if the tones are too dissonant, and might pull the reader out of their immersion as the plot makes a sharp left turn from the floating to the conspiracy.

Tl;dr: Protag starts off incredibly passive until his ADHD takes the reins and he incites criminal activity. Are these tones too different, or do you think it could work?
