I plan to do a solo JB trip soon. I’m a 26 year old Singaporean female. I do feel worried about my upcoming JB trip although I have already bought my Shuttle Tebrau ticket a month ago. The last time I went to JB was when I was a kid and my parents kept warning me about the dangers and we only stayed in City Square and then return to Singapore because my parents said it is too dangerous to be out on the streets.

I plan to go to JB because I have recently moved out from my parents’ house and I can finally travel again. Previously I used to study and work in Australia for 4 years but returned to Singapore and stayed with my parents for a while because unfortunately my visa couldn’t be renewed. I lost a lot of freedom and had to abide by daily curfew and travel ban.

I carry a 130db personal alarm clipped to my crossbody bag whenever I travel overseas or live overseas like my time in Australia. I also wear clothes and shoes that I can run in and always scan my surroundings. I never carry anything branded. I also train in weightlifting and self defence.

For those who have traveled solo to JB before, how do you find it in terms of safety and what precautions do you take?

I recently got diagnosed with ADHD at a private psychiatrist after severely struggling at work as I could not focus and had no motivation to start any tasks and I keep fidgeting which the colleagues complain about. It takes me a very long time to complete a small task and I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I was fired from my previous job and currently I’m under probation for my new job and I struggle so much so I made an appointment with a private psychiatrist to get diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

However, as I work in a temp job, after this job ends I will likely need to visit another clinic to continue my medication. I’m lucky that my current clinic is just 5 minutes walk from my office so I can go for appointments and refill medication during lunch hour. But my next workplace may not be so close to the clinic and I would likely need to change clinic to either somewhere near work or open on weekends.

I was told to bring my parents along but I tried to explain that my parents are against medical and psychiatric treatment so there’s no way they would come and testify that I have adhd symptoms. Also I’m a 25 year old woman so I can legally seek treatment without parents. I was finally diagnosed and prescribed with Ritalin, which significantly improved my functions at work and stopped me from binge eating. My medication is $50 for 30 tablets and diagnosis costed $600, monthly medication refill appointments have a practice fees of $50 and a full consultation with the psychiatrist costs $300. I’m considering about switching to cheaper clinics especially after my temp job ends. But I’m not sure whether will it be very difficult to get medication from public psychiatrists.

I just wonder how was the diagnosis process like for you all and how much it costs for regular treatment? Did you go to public or private psychiatrist? Did the psychiatrist insist that you bring along your family members to testify?

Did they ask for your school report cards?
