How would/did you build a 4" shower curb?

The curb will support a 60"w x 84"h dual sliding glass door, but its a small bathroom, so 3 1/4" min width curb (door threshold) to 4" max finished curb width. The couple guys I've asked have suggested just using one 2x4 on its side with cement board on either side. I just don't get what you'd fasten the door hardware to, if the wood might split biting into the side, or how there's not another more stable sounding way to do this. If you've built a narrow curb, what did you do?

Separately, I don't understand how you'd pitch a curb thats supporting a glass door. Could someone explain that? As you can tell I've ever built a curb. But I will enjoy tiling it.
