So I've watched the show before like 3 years ago on and off

When Stefan randomly shows up at Elena's house to give her journal back she says that he doesn't have to stand outside. Isn't that sort of an invitation inside and weren't there even other points in the show where vampires were able to enter a property with similar vague invitations. It's been a while so I might just be misremembering that last bit tho.
