So essentially I was travelling from Leeds to Manchester on Northern and in my ever so infinite 'wisdom' I hadn't properly charged my phone to survive the whole day, so I get through the barriers at Leeds, I get inspected on the train just fine, but it dies before the barriers at Victoria and I explain this to the staff and they unfortunately didn't have a power pack nor charger so they gave me a penalty and simply explained to appeal it with my reason, my valid ticket (once I actually got home and got the phone on) and the copy of the notice, which I did.

But I'm now slightly panicking because despite the Northern staff who said "Nah you probably won't be charged the penalty and the appeal will be accepted" I've read online and I'm worried if what I did falls under something called 'Strict Liability", where even though I had a valid ticket, I have proof of purchase and it was simply inaccessible that I'll still be held at fault and subject to the penalty because the responsibility to have my phone charged falls wholly on me, but then the information regarding having a valid ticket seems to counteract that so my ultimate question is: what are the odds my appeal is accepted or not?

Thanks
