I thought I would share my experience of searching for a job in the UK as a PhD level candidate in biochemistry/ drug discovery. I was searching for about 7 months.
I applied to a variety of roles: postdoctoral research associate/assistant at universities, medical writer, patent attorney, industrial researcher, and consulting (I never really wanted this one, but felt desperate in moments!). I did apply to some roles in Europe, and one in America, but the vast majority (80%) were in the UK. Eventually, I secured a role as a postdoctoral research associate in a field which is a great fit - what I wanted all along!
I found that I went through periods of hearing absolutely nothing, which was very daunting. I recently got an offer, and all of a sudden lots of the older, stagnant applications have seen responses, weird. Also, some universities are particularly awful at responding - some fancy ones too...
It wasn't easy, but it's possible. It was especially painful getting rejected from positions where your research aligns perfectly - with proficiencies in such niche skills.
Happy to discuss my experience with anyone in a similar position, who is still trying to find the right job!
Most useful sites: jobs.ac.uk, academicjobsonline
Didn't have much luck with LinkedIn or Indeed, or any of the classics. Spent most of my time checking jobs.ac.uk, university and company websites.
Good luck out there everyone!
