Most international students lose a lot of money because they don’t know about their rights when it comes to housing in the UK
Your landlord cannot just "keep" your security deposit.
They need to provide proof of damage first.
When I moved to the UK for the first time, I thought deposits were taken as a guarantee and will be returned later or counted as rent for the last month when you plan to move out
But that is not how it works here
Landlords can only keep the deposit when the give evidence for any damage caused by you during the time of your tenancy.
This can be photos, check-in reports or receipts showing actual damage.
Not just normal wear and tear.
That is why everything should be recorded when you move in any place
From room and bathroom to kitchen
Keep the recording and the conversation as evidence when you are finalizing the agreement.
Don’t forget to read your tenancy agreement.
Keep everything as proof, you don’t know when you might need any of these. And these are small things that can save you from losing big amounts.
