I have been surprised by a ton of pokemon in this game for their niche utility or just general usefulness.

My favorite example is Stoutland, who for lack of better words, is always just good enough. You can often find lilipup very early, and it evolves quite quickly into a reasonably bulky, reasonably fast, and fairly strong hitting physical attacker, who also brings a variety of support options like intimidate, snarl, and thunder wave. Shit, it can even function as a mid game set up sweeper with work up.
