Hi all,
It’s everyone’s favourite type of thread. I’m looking to get a groovebox, and I’d love to hear recommendations (I’ve got some particular spec desires, so I’m not even sure my ideal actually exists).
Portable - ideally with an internal battery. I’m looking for something I can take out of the studio, ideally in to a park or on transit.
High quality synth/sampler engines - I’m a professional composer/producer, and I’d like to be able to integrate this device into my workflow. I don’t want to be locked into a specific sound or style.
Interesting sequencer - I enjoy being able to program using various algorithmic/mathematical/randomization etc. techniques. My favourite software DAW these days is Bitwig - if I could find Bitwig in a box I’d be overjoyed. My ideal sequencers have multiple lanes, so notes, CCs, gate times, velocity, etc. can all be separate sequences with separate lengths.

I’ve been eyeing up the MPC Live 3, and there’s lots that looks on the mark for me, but unless I’m missing something, it doesn’t have the extra sequencing options. The built-in interface looks incredible and I love the notion of a built-in mic. Right now this is my front runner, but I’d love to hear from people who have them about sequencing options or MIDI manipulation effects.
I was also checking out the Polyend Tracker Mini, but I don’t love the interface and I’m not sure that a tracker is the right thing for me. It seems laborious and doesn’t give me the spontaneity and physical interaction that I like in my process.
Every time I search online, I’m introduced to a new device that I hadn’t considered before, so I would love to hear people’s opinions!
