My Interpretation Of "Blue Hair"
I listened to the song "Blue Hair" recently, and I really loved it! While I know the meaning is about a fading romance between the protagonists girlfriend due to her acting more mature. But, I see it a little differently.
I see it as a song about a parents greif of their child growing up, and becoming more independent. The child is likely in their teens, and they start asking questions on stuff, like being funny or pretty ("She asked me how to be funny" "She asked me if she was pretty") but the mother tries to stop her from becoming too crazy ("But that's not something you can teach" "Well, it's clear that the girl's a fraud") because the mother isn't used to their daughter acting like this and is so used to them being a little girl. The child is spending less time with the mother because of their growing independence ("And I tried to hold her
But it didn't really last long
She's getting older"). Now, as for the elephant in the room.. what could cutting off the "blue hair" mean? To me, I see it as a symbol of trying desperately to cut off the parental control, not literal hair, which ties back to my other interpretations. The mother sees that their daughter is growing up rapidly, and feels bitter about it because their daughter is becoming more rebellious and independent, as well as possibly getting into more fights with her ("I guess she's gotta cut her blue hair off" "If in their eyes you'll always be a dumb blonde
And she cried over nothing
So there was nothing I could do to stop
Her from cutting
Her beautiful blue hair off" "Last I heard she was living
With a boy who acts his age
And I guess I'll just miss her
Even though she isn't even really gone
But things are just different
Ever since she cut her blue hair off"). The mother has to accept that their daughter is growing up, and that she feels less of the need for her mother's guidance.
