My husband and I want to build a shed in our backyard to replace a shed that is falling apart inside and is positioned in the middle of the right side of our yard. This is our forever home, so if we build a new shed we want it to be our dream shed that we'll use and enjoy for the next 50 years (not just an outdoor storage closet). We want something that we could use as a workshop. We're not huge DIYers (yet) and only do some smaller projects like building our garden fencing and beds, but when our kids get older I would love to have a space for us to work together on bigger renovation projects on the house and yard.

We have a back corner of the yard that could fit a 20x30 shed and would be tucked away in a corner behind our garden. I'm not sure if that would be big enough for shed with a workshop, and I am leaning toward saving that space for a possible greenhouse in the future.

We have space for a 30x50 shed on the back right corner of our 0.5 acre backyard, right behind where the current shed is. Once the new shed is built, we'd remove everything from the old shed and demolish it which would give us back the 15x30 space in front of our new shed. So while the 30x50 shed will take up a big chunk of this big open grass space, I think our yard might still feel bigger once we remove the old shed.

Now for the advice:

  1. What would you do, 20x30 or 30x50, and why?

  2. What are the must-haves you think we should include in our shed (layout, tools, workspace, etc.)?

  3. Any other advice, or things we should be thinking about? Maybe things you didn't realize you knew you needed, and wished you would've thought of upfront?

Thank you!! Picture attached for reference.
