On D-R-B (ض ر ب) in the Qur’an — with 4:34 in view

The root D-R-B is often translated as “hit”, but that meaning does not hold when the Qur’an’s own usage is taken seriously.

Across the Book, D-R-B is used for: • setting forth an example (daraba mathalan) • establishing a barrier or separation (57:13) • enforcing suspension or restraint (18:11)

The shared function is decisive intervention that creates distinction, distance, or consequence — not bodily violence.

Read internally, 4:34 is not describing a physical scene but a graded response to a destabilising state. The sequence moves from: • verbal alerting • withdrawal of engagement • then D-R-B as the final measure

A tight English rendering of the relevant sequence would be:

“…then address them, then disengage from them in shared space, then decisively intervene.”

This reading fits: • the Qur’an’s consistent use of D-R-B • the non-physical nature of the surrounding roots • and the immediate continuation into mediation in 4:35

The idea of physical striking is imported. It is not required by the language or the flow of the text.
