The lighting in this chapter does such a good job at capturing Meru’s and Shizuka’s mental state. Like in the first picture as Shizuka starts writing she enters Meru’s world of despair but hope still shines brightly with the symbolism of the lamp. With the second one Meru feels responsible for pulling shizuka into that world and proceeds to sink deeper as the panel gets split into dark and darker mini panels. Slides 3-5 the room is completely dimmed with Shizuka at her lowest but Meru’s confidence in her reignites her hope and the room brightens. In slide 5 an interesting thing I noticed is that the light is centred on the can instead of where the lamp would be. Shows that her hope isn’t coming from herself like at the start but from Meru instead. In slide 6 Meru’s response to Shizuka’s book brightened her world again to show not only did this clear Shizuka’s doubt fully but a more subtle way that Shizuka saved Meru from the despair she felt in slide 2. And then the final slide to finish off the chapter with the calmly lit library with all the conflict resolved. Just absolute peak. I would like to finish my ramble by saying I love this series man and this is one of the many reasons why.
