I'm looking for a book to gift to my mom for her birthday. I know she likes realistic fiction and non-fiction. like a year ago I recommended Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto to her and she really liked it. i think what she liked about it was that it was about serious issues but nothing especially sad/bad happened. Like obviously it's a book about grief, and bad things happen, but in a realistic and understated way. Its not like the book is trying to shock you, and it had a happy ending. I think she also liked the writing style; when I have asked her in the past what kinds of books she likes, she has told me that she really just like well written books that are realistic or non-fiction. When she was younger, her favorite author was Philip Roth, if that helps. Although she doesn't like him so much anymore because of all the misogyny in his books. Also, A Room with a View by E.M. Foster is her favorite book. Any suggestions?
