About six months ago I was scheduled for an ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (BIRADS 4). When I was on the exam table I asked if there was going to be numbing, and they said no. Their reasoning was that the lidocaine shot would hurt more than the actual biopsy, and that this kind of biopsy needle is very thin.
That made me panic and almost start crying so I declined the biopsy, as you need to stay very still for the procedure, and I couldn't compose myself for it.
I have quite a low pain tolerance, and their lack of numbing options really made me feel like I cant do it, especially with the lump being so tender. Now I regret that I didn't go through with it.
Can anyone tell me their experiences with FNA biopsy no numbing?
Edit: the doctor later told me that in his opinion, since I am young and he suspects them to be fibroadenomas, that I wasn't in urgent need of biopsy. However I regret not doing it because I've been worrying about it all the time after the fact.
