Naegleria fowleri, or the brain eating amoeba and the potential risk to human health in warm water. [unintentional]

Naegleria fowleri is a relatively rare amoeba which likes to live in warm fresh water, especially in the mud and silt at the bottom of these bodies of water. With more of these bodies of water around humans are facing a small if increasing risk from the amoeba. Potentially the amoeba can enter the human body via the nose where the amoeba can feed on nerves in the nose and potentially migrate into the brain. Infections of the amoeba are often lethal so even though the risk of infection is small any increase is concerning.
