So I am 24M, married, in grad school, and still in the process of getting my life in order. I, for the first time in my life, was able to get a Primary Care doctor after I finally had a job that has solid insurance. But, I just got my Lipoprotein (a) result back, and feel a bit devastated (279 nmol/L).
Here's some other numbers if this helps:
| Test / Marker | Result |
|---|---|
| Lipoprotein(a), Lp(a) | 279 nmol/L |
| HbA1c | 5.7% |
| Total cholesterol | 173 mg/dL |
| HDL cholesterol | 39 mg/dL |
| Calculated LDL cholesterol | 123 mg/dL |
| Non-HDL cholesterol | 134 mg/dL |
| Triglycerides | 54 mg/dL |
I went from a very active lifestyle in undergrad (fencing, mountain biking) to a very sedentary lifestyle for the past 1.5 years. My BMI was normal throughout undergrad, and it is now in the overweight range. In fact, I was almost anorexic and then my weight shot up like anything once I stopped working out and just sat from 9-5 in front of a computer.
I still walk 5-7 miles daily, and I do not feel "exhausted" when doing strength-related activities (I live on a 5th floor apartment, stairs only, and often move stuff up and down). My diet has been a little unhealthy lately, which was because my workplace gets a lot of processed food. But, I have been talking to a dietician and making proper changes for the past 2 weeks.
I also remembered that 2 of my 4 grandparents died because of heart conditions (and my mom's mom dies very young, like in her 50s, due to a heart attack), and some younger family members also had heart conditions recently. I just feel very discouraged. But, yes, I have been talking to a trainer and a dietician lately. My next appointment with my primary care is next Tuesday, where we will discuss this more.
Would love any feedback from the community, or any advice. Or really, anything. Thank you ❤️
