Looking at relocating to the Launceston area — where would locals recommend?

Hey everyone,

My family and I are looking seriously at relocating from Cairns to somewhere around Launceston or northern Tasmania over the next year or so, and I’d love to hear from people who actually live there.

We’re pretty outdoors-oriented people — trail running, camping, hiking, dogs, that sort of thing — and we’re drawn to the cooler climate and slower pace compared to FNQ.

We both teach senior science subjects and we’ve got a young child, so we’re trying to work out:

  • what areas are best for families
  • where has the strongest community feel
  • what daily life is actually like outside the tourist perspective
  • whether people generally settle in socially
  • what catches mainlanders by surprise after moving down

Not expecting paradise — just hoping for honest perspectives from locals.

Thanks.

Advice regarding QLD to Tasmania family move

Hi everyone — myself and wife are experienced senior science teachers (Chemistry, Physics, Earth & Environmental Science, Biology and Psychology) looking into a move from Cairns to northern Tasmania.

Asking for advice (about TAS - as have previously moved) and trying to get a realistic sense of:

  • school culture differences
  • staffing demand in TAS
  • workload/lifestyle balance
  • schools or regions with strong academic/science programs

I’ve taught in both challenging and high-performing environments and would really value honest perspectives from TAS teachers — especially around Launceston/northern areas.

Thanks in advance.
