Integration Thoughts

Situation:

I have 8 birds four of which are sibling juveniles. I thought I would end up with four male juveniles so I sourced four unrelated females. Turns out I have 3 male juveniles and 1 female. No problem. The four new females have been in a quarantine cage they also had moxivet prior to me procuring them. They are happy and healthy and look beautiful. I ended up having to move the juvenile female sibling to the quarantine cage with the other young females because she started displaying hormonal to the older male sibling, they were perching together a lot more, etc. So she got moved to the quarantine cage and has since been fine.

I have moved the quarantine cage, so it’s next to the main cage so the birds can see each other for the last week of quarantine. They’ve been able to Hear each other and talk back-and-forth, but now they can see eachother. In a week, I was planning to integrate the female birds from the quarantine cage into the main cage, so that the three juvenile males can select who they want to pair with. Obviously, when I said and done, I’m gonna be left with two females with no male pair, but that’s fine.

The Concern:

I don’t want the sibling males to pair with the sibling female.

Question for the room:

In a weeks time, would you move only three of the four unrelated females from the quarantine cage into the main cage to give the three juvenile males time to select a mate before moving the sibling female back over? Or would you just move all five females from the quarantine cage over and let nature do its thing hoping the female sibling doesn’t pair up with any of her male siblings? I think it’s called The Westermarck effect which basically says birds raised together develop reduced pairing preference for eachother when there are other unfamiliar options available. but it’s not full proof.

Picked up these beauties today to introduce to my young males. Quarantine for 30 days first! Thankfully the breeder gave them moxivet so that should eliminate many possible issues when integrating new birds. In any event - welcome to the flock ladies!!

I wanted to share something with you, but I have to preface this by saying that I do not consider myself any kind of an expert. I’ve just done a lot of research and a lot of thinking and I’m pretty creative. Also worth noting that this is a Prevue F050 cage in an apartment.

I have a flock of eight - soon to be 12 - And in order to help give everybody a little bit of privacy, to help break sight lines when anybody is being mischievous, and to provide a completely different kind of enrichment, I took my very normal every day branch clusters that you buy at the local bird shop and, on the underside of them, I have zip tied bird-safe plastic terrarium plants. Specifically the mandarin plant. I didn’t attach them on the underside of every single branch in each of the clusters, but just enough with the idea being that it creates a kind of canopy for the section just below it.

Cleaning is a breeze because I just have to detach the perches like normal and give them a good spray down and things just fall right off. The birds love walking through the leaves. And because they’re terrarium plants made to be assaulted, They are sturdy and can’t be destroyed.

I wish I could describe to you guys the difference it has made for my birds. They all get along and they are all very much a tightknit flock however month old fledglings, and two pairs of adults has been very interesting 😂. This has helped calm things down so very much and everybody very quickly is finding their spot. Not to mention, as I said, the enrichment - which I must admit, was an unintended consequence. I did my best to make it look as natural as possible and it kind of gives a nice interesting vibe to the cage.

Just sharing a cool idea. Havnt seen it anywhere before.

All four babies came out of the nest for the first time today. They are flying around and hopping around on the perches great. Albeit uncoordinated. They are also still trying to hold on to things and often fall off. I’ve noticed that they havnt yet developed the notion of personal space hahaha they like to crawl on each other even out of the nest. Too cute!!

More progress taming my zebra finch! We started with a flat hand and now we are moving to a finger. He is more and more confident and just hops right on now. I can even move with him on!! I have found that the more dominant and confident birds are more likely to be tamed.

I have some infertile eggs from my very first round of trying for baby finches. What should I do with these?? I k ow the answer is probably to throw them away but that feels odd to me somehow

Super excited with the progress I’ve been making in taming my zebra finches! Particularly as I’m a new bird owner (almost two months now). It’s taken a long time but now two of my birds willingly jump into my hand for millet. The male even lets me move around slowly. The female has only done it within the confines of the cage but the male does it outside too. So awesome!
