Knife thickness before hardening

How thick should a knife be before hardening? I am talking about both the spine and bevel. I think i am almost ready for hardening, but i dont know how thin it should be.

Hey, I recently started making my first knife and so far i really like it. I am making a penny knife out of 1084 steel using stock removal. Because it is a small knife i get quite close to my grinder with my fingers, but i just saw a video saying you shouldnt use gloves while grinding. I am using quite thin forging gloves and don’t know if i should use them now for safety. Does anybody know if i should or shouldn’t use them? Also the metal gets quit hot when grinding. The gloves protected me from the heat, but without them i think i would just burn myself. Should i use something like water to cool it down while grinding or is there something else i should be doing? (English is not my first language so sorry if i messed some translation up)
