NR1200 Inputs/Source Level
Good day,
I always wondered why sound from my Apple TV via HDMI was so much louder compared to AirPlay 2 in my Marantz NR1200.
I discovered recently that there is a Inputs/Source Level setting under Inputs in the Setup Menu. It's not a global setting and needs to be adjusted for every source (HDMI, AirPlay, TOSLINK, etc.).
I am not sure why it was set to 0 for AirPlay and to the maximum of 12 for HDMI - maybe I did it once for HDMI and didn't notice that it needs to be reapplied for other sources.
However, I wonder if the maximum of 12 is actually just Full-Scale dBFS. Means, a true passthrough of the unaltered digital data stream. In this case, keeping it to 0 would be a digital volume reduction that then requires additional amplification to bring the volume back (higher power usage, more heat, etc.).
Having the setting adjusted to the maximum of 12 makes my AirPlay playback so much louder and stronger without any distortions. I truly feel the power of the amp now. I find this important setting should be highlighted more clearly in the documentation. AirPlay sounds lame when it remains on 0. Assuming this is dB then 12 dB is a lot of damping.
Does anyone use HEOS with the NR1200 and can check if the setting is also set to 0?
