Do you remember Cymbal.fm, the app that Anthony used to use? I was a founder and I have really missed it, so I've relaunched.

Hey Fantano Freaks,

Quick quick story. When I was in high school 15 years ago, I had a music blog where I shared one song a day. I loved the ritual of it, and I loved writing a blurb about why I felt each song was special. Anthony was a huge influence on me. I loved his writing and they way he spoke about music so intently.

In college I created the Cymbal app with a few friends. The idea was pretty simple: Share the song you're obsessed with in the moment, follow friends and curators and get a feed of 1 song for each person. When Anthony joined the app, it was a dream come true. I LOVED working with him and seeing him share what he was listening to. For each song, he shared a great blurb, and it was so nice to wake up each day, listen to his songs and read his writing.

Unfortunately circumstances were tough back then and we had to shut it down due to financial issues. Since then I've deeply missed it. I miss having it has a home to share what I liked and connect with other nice people over good music. A lot has changed since Cymbal was around: Music discovery has become nearly fully driven by algorithms, and social media as we know it shows us ads every 10 seconds and is getting more and more filled with AI slop. So I'd like to give it another shot. With Corus, I want to push back in the other direction.

I don't want this to be a big advertisement, after I just ripped on ads. So I'll let it speak for itself and I'm happy to answer any questions in the comments. I'm just a guy who likes music/film and wants to use tech for good.

Thanks so much and happy listening.

Do you remember Cymbal.fm? I was a founder and I'm relaunching a new music social network – Corus. No ads, no ai slop, no algorithms. Only the art you love, shared by real people.

Hi r/music!

I'm very excited to let you all know about the launch of Corus, available on the App Store, Play Store, and Web.

12 years ago, I launched Cymbal with a few close friends. Unfortunately due to financial issues, we had to shut it down. A lot has changed since then: Music discovery has become nearly fully driven by algorithms, and social media as we know it shows us ads every 10 seconds and is getting more and more filled with AI slop. There simply isn't a good home to be social around the music we love. So I'd like to give it another shot. With Corus, I want to push back in the other direction.

On Corus you share music (and film) you love. You curate your profile, so that it’s the perfect representation of who you are. You follow friends (and strangers) and get a live chronological feed of their picks. You can tap to play the songs, export to Spotify, or play the songs fully with Apple Music within the app. Soundcloud is supported too. As you post, Corus will find other users that have a similar taste to you, by showing you users who have shared the same songs/artists. You can like/comment/repost just like other social media. The important thing is that it’s a place where it’s all about what you love, not about what you hate like other platforms. It’s a celebration of art and of what you feel in the moment. Art is just better when it comes from real people.

I would love for the r/music community to give it a go and give feedback. I hope this can be a project driven by musicians and music lovers. My first goal is to keep the app up forever and pay for the servers, but later on I hope it can be a space for musicians, curators and DJs to make money as well.

Thank you so much,

Gabe
