Volunteering

So I’ve completed a level 2 and level 3 electrical installations course at college 2 years ago and I want to get back into the trade. I have 30 hours of work experience already from college so a little bit of on site experience already. I have an Ecs card and I am currently debating to buy my own tools too so that I can volunteer for a couple of months at a local small business hoping for someone to say yes so I can get back to working on site and get some more good experience. I have also been debating to just go ahead and apply for an electricians mate job either employed or agency however it’s been a while and I am a little rusty in my electrical capabilities. Do you think it’s a good idea to volunteer for a couple months once per week to gain experience and then apply? I have applied for a couple of apprenticeships and have gotten to the interview stage and have been unsuccessful. I am also age 20. Thanks for any comments.
