For some background, I work for a hospital in Texas in the outpatient lab. We are required to be on call at least 3 days out of the month which is usually after work (M-F) 5pm through 8am the next day, and Saturday and Sunday 8-8. This consists of getting called on our personal phones at any time during our call hour and go out and draw a patient or pick up a specimen. During work hours (M-F 8am-5pm) we are also on “local” call and we also go out to draw patients or pick up specimens, this is the same as being overnight call but we are at work and the calls are divided between 2-4 people. But we are still getting called on our personal phones. Our leadership recently had a meeting with the CEO, and this issue was brought up. The CEO basically said if we want a job where we don’t use our phones then we should get another job. Are we allowed to ask for company phones? We’re not asking for the latest high tech phone, or should they provide a stipend for data used? Thank you for your advice and help.
