It’s 8pm on the 5 May and I have until tomorrow at 6pm to decide my firm and insurance choices. I feel like there’s so much pressure one what I choose.
I live in Birmingham and I am in a committed long term relationship. I am applying to study mechanical engineering.
I am set on my firm choice being University of Birmingham. They are originally asking for AAB but i have an offer of BBB if i set it as my firm choice through the A2B scheme. I am doubting myself I will get BBB although I know I am capable, I haven’t gotten Bs throughout the year at all.
That leaves one spot for my insurance choice. I am pretty certain I want it to be either Aston or Nottingham Trent. Both have offered me CCC.
I went to the open days for both of these and I preferred Nottingham Trent. It is only an hour drive from here but i feel like commuting everyday will be impractical and id miss out on extracurricular and student life. The main driving factor of NTU is its extracurricular because i feel engineering employers look at practical experience a lot. Aston doesn’t offer much of this at all from what I saw on the open day. In terms of status and rankings and education, they’re pretty much exactly equal.
If i chose to move away to nottingham the maintenance fee would be about £8000, pretty much doubling my loan to payback (£9000 tuition fee).
My girlfriend will put aston and nottingham trent down but isn’t sure which one she’d like to go to. she’ll get the grades for both but obviously has more time to pick between the two as she has until results day and i have until tomorrow. she much prefers the course in nottingham.
It’s only an hour away so it wouldn’t be massively long distance but it would be a big jump. I’d like to experience moving out and living in another city with her but she’s very anxious for it and is it worth the extra money.
I’m very stuck on what to do and I feel a lot of pressure on my future (paying back loans) and my relationship (potentially going long distance). I’m unsure about how it would affect my chances as a mechanical engineer as they are so closely ranked but i think i’d be given more opportunity at NTU.
ANY COMMENTS OR ADVICE HELPS. Thank you so much.
(if i select UoB and NTU, and then on results day i miss Birmingham and get CCC, but I change my mind and want to go to aston- Is it likely i’d get it through clearing? Is that smart to risk?)
