2 year old Cat - Stage 3
My two year old cat was diagnosed with Stage 3 Kidney Disease back in January. His labs have always been off so it is more than likely congenital. Luckily, his labs have not gotten worse. He is on Hills k/d diet. We have ran so many tests and did an abdominal ultrasound earlier this year. ‘Kidneys normal in size with mildly decreased corticomedullary distinction’. In January he had a focal seizure, two more in February, and two more earlier this week.
On all three occasions, we have taken him to the vet where he has been given SubQ fluids and returned to normal within 24 hours (for a few weeks until the next seizure).
Our vet recommended starting him on SubQ fluids every three days and starting Phenobarbital to manage the seizures.
I work from home and can tell when my cat is ‘flaring’. Lethargic, eating less, weight loss, and throwing up almost every night. After 2-3 days his ‘flare’ eventually leads to a focal seizure. Resolving almost immediately after the SubQ injection.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? I’m concerned about starting him on medication twice a day if the seizures may be more related to anemia or complications from his kidney disease rather than a primary seizure disorder.
