I’m returning to my old high school as a visual tech, but I only graduated in 2025, so I’ll be instructing juniors and seniors that I marched with not long ago, many of whom I text on social media.

Once I return to the school as an instructor in the fall, should I stop texting those students until they graduate? I want to maintain a professional relationship with my students and avoid any rumors/accusations at all costs, but I don’t want to ruin relationships either.

Also, should I have them call me by first or last name? I understand it’s common for drum corps staff to go by first name, but many of their students are adults, and the group is generally more mature than a high school band.
