A friend has an old “driving without insurance” fine from about 10 years ago. She tried a payment plan back then but couldn’t keep up due to unstable work and stopped completely during the pandemic.
She’s now been working full‑time for 2 years and wants to pay it off. The fine is around $3500 and currently with a collection agency. She can’t pay a lump sum but wants to restart payments.
Anyone have experience dealing with Ontario traffic fines in collections?
What’s the best way to approach the agency and set up a payment plan?
Is there any room to negotiate the total amount? I know the court‑ordered fine itself is fixed, but I’ve heard that sometimes collection agencies can reduce their added fees. Has anyone had success with that?
