Currently a Software Engineer at a hedge fund in NYC, and honestly burned out on pure tech and this new AI work. I want to build something of my own, but not a traditional SaaS/startup.

I’m more interested in building a real, scalable business in the US, something in industrials, distribution, or import/export (e.g., chemicals, materials, B2B supply chains), not just flipping products on Amazon.

Where I’m stuck:

  • Most content online is about e-commerce, dropshipping, or “quick wins,” which I’m not interested in
  • The industries I am interested in (chemicals, steel, manufacturing) seem to have very high barriers (capital, regulation, relationships)
  • I’m willing to invest time and capital, but I don’t have direct industry experience yet

What I’m trying to figure out:

  • What’s the right entry point into these kinds of businesses?
  • Does it make more sense to start with distribution/importing first and then go deeper?
  • How do people break into B2B supply chains without prior connections?
  • Any examples of paths people here have taken from tech → industrial, or non-tech businesses?

Not looking for shortcuts, I’m okay with a long-term build, just want to make sure I’m not approaching this blindly.

If anyone here has made a similar transition or is building in this space, I would love to connect or hear your perspective.
