Snakes of Narcisse Update

May 12, 2026:

The numbers of snakes at Narcisse have been increasing and viewing will be good for the weekend. Warm, sunny days are best for viewing snakes. Dens 2 and 3 are most active.

Is it truly worth the price of $1400?

These projects are a ton of work. I've done a similar project with the same requirements before. And guess what they offered me?

9000 CAD plus the tools I needed for 3 months.

It actually took me 4 and a half months to get it working in the system.

Here's what I think about these projects:

If you don't deliver a fully working system, you shouldn't get an invoice for only $1400.

Who approved these kinds of projects for students? These are totally professional jobs.

[URGENT] Canvas Data Breach - Check Your Accounts

Security alert for everyone at U of Manitoba: Canvas (Instructure) has confirmed a massive data breach.

If you use your university email for external courses, certifications, or programs, your data (name, email, student ID, and messages) is likely exposed.

Immediate Actions:

  1. Change your password on Canvas right now.
  2. If you reuse that password elsewhere (UM Learn, Gmail, etc.), change those too.
  3. Enable MFA on all student accounts.
  4. Watch for phishing: Expect fake "security" emails. Don't click links; go directly to the official site.

Official Updates:https://www.instructure.com/incident_update

Stay safe. Don't ignore this.

I have a question regarding the authorization of City of Winnipeg meter readers to access private property for the purpose of meter readings. I observed a discussion on another social media platform where individuals commented that such access is "not without a warrant," among other assertions.

I’ve been looking into the upper limits of academic impact and came across some profiles that seem to defy logic. For example, Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad has been cited as having over 5 million citations, yet the world’s most famous living scientists generally plateau around the 1 million mark. Even Gero Decher, a giant in chemistry, is nowhere near that range despite his massive influence.

Is it actually possible for a human being to reach 5 million legitimate citations? To put that in perspective, you would effectively need to be cited by nearly every paper published across multiple scientific disciplines for several decades.

I’m curious if the community thinks these numbers are verified or if we are just seeing "citation glitches." Google Scholar is known for merging profiles with common names or double-counting non-academic documents like patents and syllabi. At what point does a citation count stop representing innovation and start representing a broken algorithm? Would love to hear from anyone who has seen a verified profile anywhere near this level.

Hey everyone, I’m TA-ing for the first time this summer and wanted to get some perspective from both sides.

To TAs: What’s the one thing you wish you knew before your first lab or tutorial? Especially with the faster summer pace, how do you keep up with grading without losing your mind?

To Students: What actually makes a TA helpful? What are your biggest pet peeves?

I want to make sure I’m actually supporting people and not just being another source of stress during a condensed term. Thanks!

Hey everyone, just wanted to check if anyone else participating in Riipen Labs received an email saying their submission was incomplete or didn't meet minimum requirements.

I updated my worklogs and uploaded my final deliverables but wanted to see if this was a wider issue or just something on my end. Would be helpful to know if others are in the same boat and what you did to resolve it.

Thanks
