We are hoping that tree guards will be funded this year! Here’s why - the average life span of a street tree in NYC is 7 years, that means many trees never get to deliver their full benefits to neighborhoods, specifically their cooling powers during ever hotter months. Larger trees also foster biodiversity which is correlated with better neighborhood wellbeing. Tree guards reduce direct dog pee and poop on trees, reduces foot traffic over soil and roots and can reduce trash buildup reducing the potential for root rot or rodent habitats.
