Where have I gone wrong?

I recently bought a flash for my Olympus OM-10, some shots have come out well but ones where the subject isn’t up close or there isn’t a subject haven’t.

Where have I gone wrong in my settings for this effect?

Essentially I want more clarity in these shots

Rivets in a crash of doom

I want to put rivets in my 22 Crash of Doom.

Is this a terrible idea? In my head it seems like a brilliant idea.
