Favorite Fry and Leela moment/interaction? This one is my my Top 5

It just sums up their dynamic perfectly, plus I'm a sucker for scenes of a sober person interacting with their drunk lover

Fun Fact: Family Guy has referenced Futurama many times but Bender is the only character to make multiple cameos

I remember when I first started watching the show, I had a theory that Fry's family thought he committed suicide

Ok so- there's probably a mountain of evidence to prove it isn't true but it was my personal theory/head canon for a while now, so just bear with me here on why I thought this.

  1. When Michelle got sent to the future she explained to him that his family "didn't really care" that he was gone and that it "would be a waste of tax dollars" but I think she lied. Specially if the police were looking for him (even if it were for a little bit) I'm sure Fry's family eventually figured out that Michelle was the last to see him before his disappearance to which she would have admitted that she broke up with him and left his stuff out and that was the last time they spoke. Therefore, his family could have come to the conclusion that that specific moment led him to end his life. She could have genuinely felt guilt at the possibility that Fry ended his life "because of her" hence the line "So nobody cared that I was gone?" "Well no...except one person." She didn't have the heart that his family thought he killed himself. She felt like there was enough grief going around. He simply thought that making him think he didn't miss out on much would help him move on with life rather than live heartbroken. She was just relieved she didn't actually push him to do such a thing.

  2. You might argue that Fry "isn't the type of guy to commit suicide," but this is actually quite common amongst victims. That being their families become offended when you suggest they ended their life on purpose because "They were so sweet and lovable! They would never!" And I think this further plays into my theory, that they had to cope with the possibility that Fry DID show signs of suicidal thoughts but ignored them or he was incredible at hiding it. We see that Fry's parents were never exactly the emotional type. His dad was pretty tough on him. His mother was maybe a little too obsessed with sports, and his older brother liked teasing him more than he liked loving him. To me, it came across like Yancy genuinely felt guilt when finding Fry's clover and copying his style because he should've just told him how talented he truly was rather than act all smart about, otherwise maybe his brother would still be alive.

  3. Fry didn't NECESSARILY kill himself because of Michelle, but rather, she was the final nail in the coffin. It's actually incredibly common for people to get depressed during holidays, and Fry went missing exactly on New Year's Eve and men are more likely to succeed killing themselves than women are because they use more violent methods. He could have done so because the pressure of a new year approaching made him truly reflect on his life. He was (allegedly) depressed before due to being stuck at a dead end job, dropping out of college, growing up with parents who aren't the best with their emotions, and now his GF dumped him and he's technically homeless. Basically, he went, "What am I doing with my life?" and concluded it was going nowhere.

  4. Then why did they think they couldn't find a suicide note or even a body? Well, because a suicide note is hard core evidence that the suicide was likely planned for a long period of time, people who commit at the last minute don't have time to write a note. He could've drowned himself, or maybe even ended his life in the forest or in an abandoned building. Basically, anywhere were nobody was around to stop him.

TL;DR Fry's family thought he committed suicide because he was battling mental problems but told nobody, hence why he showed no signs and Michelle dumping him last minute was the nail in the coffin.

I hate that Fry is actually kinda hot

The show seems to play off the idea that he's meant to be average looking and even bad at sex but idc he's genuinely cute

That's it.

That's the post.

I'm dead.

The way his hair is pointed and his red jacket kinda screams "future" to me, and I never really understood why. It just does lol

I am, of course- referring to any couples trope that falls into the "She's out of my league" category. I bring this up because there is a specific trope that is often used that absolutely loathe that falls into this category, that being the "Ugly guy Hot wife" trope. I obviously do not need to explain this one since everyone has seen it at least once. However, Leela was never out of Frys league because he was ugly, she was out of his league because she's smart, organized, and hard working and he was a college drop out that was afraid of commitment. If anything, you can even make the argument that Fry is even a good-looking dude when he straightens himself out. He was a good man overall, he just needed discipline. After all, Leela said so herself, "I love his boy-ish charm, but I hate his childishness." She was never repulsed by him, just afraid he would get bored and refuse to grow alongside her.

As a result, this is by no means "Ugly guy and Hot wife" this is more or less "Goofball bf × Serious gf" and it just feels so refreshing to see a TV couple that actually look like they deserve one another rather than holding one or the other back.

In the first episode, you notice that Fry pretty much immediately finds Leela attractive until she turns around. We, of course, get many episodes following that joke consistently, where men find Leela off putting due to the eye and her insecurities that come with it. However, I noticed that the narrative kind of switches between "Leela is too good for Fry because she's smart, strong, and beautiful. that's why he needs to improve, " and "Leela is seen as hideous in this universe" because we have instances where characters like Zapp find her beautiful almost instantly even with the eye but then we also have gags where men don't even look her direction because of her eye.

I kind of always brushed it off as "Oh well I guess humans have accepted aliens in this universe but they're still weirded out by their appearance at times, they just know that they're harmless" but then we just straight up have Amy (a character that is CONFIRMED to be considered beautiful in this universe) straight up finding Kiff handsome at first sight despite him being infinitely more weird looking than just a cute girl with one large eye?

I understand that Fry is the main character and all but since we no longer have to do episodes of Fry having to "prove" himself to Leela we end up getting a lot of episodes of them trying to make it work. And I know we have "The Stinger" but it was honestly such a fresh take on the relationship for me....the idea that Leela KNOWS she has feelings for him but was just afraid that he would break her heart, only to regret that she never gave him a chance. I just wish we could have more of it
