Analyzing Evil: Ernesto De La Cruz
Would HEAVILY RECOMMEND to read Coco: A Story of Music, Shoes and Family for additional information on Ernesto and his relationship with Héctor.
Also, some details:
-Ernesto was born in 1896, as stated on the official Disney wiki; confirmed by his creator via a now deleted Twitter post. He's 4 years older than Héctor, who was born Friday, November 30, 1900.
-Ernesto is designed after famous Mexican actors and singers from the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, in particular, Jorge Negrete. He was also inspired by Pedro Infante; ironically, he interact with the two during his party.
-Despite getting crushed a second time, Ernesto still exists in the Land of the Dead, as Unkrich confirmed. He has stated that Ernesto is still remembered for his movies and his story as the one who stole Héctor's guitar and his songs and murdered him, albeit permanently disgraced.
-He was likely familiar with Imelda, given that she was his (former) best friends wife.
-Given that Ernesto poured the drink poisoned tequilla in full view of Héctor, he couldn't have poured poison then and there, meaning that he already planned on poisoning him as a backup plan, in case his attempt to convince Héctor to stay failed.
(this could also mean that, since he also drank from that bottle, he probably took the poison himself in small doses to built up immunity)
-Ernesto's alebrijes are Chihuahua's, which are a reflection of his arrogance as he's like the tiny Mexican dog: he acts high and mighty when really, he is anything but.
-Also, according to the creators, Ernesto was acting out of genuine selflessness when he rescued Miguel from the pool, not simply playing the hero to keep up appearances. It seems he's happy to do the right thing... as long as it doesn't cost him anything.
-Really, you should also look at this Tumblr post for more info:
