Can someone explain how the SPL works in terms of number of matches played & the Championship/Relegation group system? Also have there been other close title races recently with other “outsider” clubs like Hearts?

I know that Hearts are in contention for a title to potentially breakup the Celtic-Rangers duopoly. I’ve watched a few matches this season and learned about Celtic’s coaching merry go round & their interesting signings like OX. I just realized today I don’t know how the end of season works.
