Retaker - English as 2nd language - jumped from 249 to 278

I graduated from Law school below rank 50. English is not my first language.

I did Themis for last July and got 249. I was devastated. My MBE score was 118.

I knew that I did not practice enough of the multiple-choice.

I was searching Reddit, and I found that people recommended GOAT bar prep.

I decided to go with it and try everything to make sure that I passed. AND I DID! I never have to open that Sealed Exam booklet again.

I will talk about the pros and cons of Goat bar prep.

CONS: Nothing

PROS: Everything; here are the details

Here are the things that I liked Goat bar prep way more than Themis

  1. Simple and entertaining - do I have to even elaborate here? Back in July, I could state the rule, for example, larceny by trick, but I cannot give an example when asked to do so. In some ways, I could not apply. The goat bar used lots of visuals and simple words to enhance and enrich my understanding.

  2. Immediate feedback - when I had questions, and trust me, GOAT bar knows how many times I bugged him with tons of questions, and he will know :) Not only GOAT bar was immediate in responding to my emails, but he also made sure that I understood every concept. I tried to ask questions in compiled sets. So the Goat does not hate me. He is the GOAT but still a human too.

  3. Updates and interactions - trust me, Themis is not really good at this. Whenever there are new materials posted, Goat always post updates and say there is a new material. The law changes every time so this is one of the features that I really liked about Goat

  4. Explanations - I used free themis retake and using the UWorld, sometimes I cannot understand the explanation. I will ask Goat to explain again and he surely did.

  5. Spot on MEE predictions - I focused on landlord tenant, secured transaction, corporations, wills, Civ pro, evidence, con law specifically for the test and boom - I was lucky - do read every MEE stuff - and ask for more - GOAT will probably tell you that I annoyed him to a certain level he was thinking about suing me for IIED :)

Here are the things I did differently compared to July - happy to answer more through DMs if needed

  1. Goat bar - I read Goat bar constantly. After done with studying, if I know I am weak at, for example, hearsay, I would use my tablet and just skim again. The next day I wake up, I try to write a essay or do multiple choice on evidence

  2. Explain to lawyers & non lawyers - I explained to bar studying friends & non law related person - if I cannot explain to them in simple words to my non lawyers, I treated as I did not know the concept and went back, make sure state the rule and examples. You need both just because you might get the credit for writing in simple words.

  3. I did 25 Multiple choice per day, timed and tutor mode. I ended up using all the questions in the UWorld. This is the important part - for all the questions when I reviewed, I went through each answer choice and asked myself this question "How would I change it so that this answer is the right answer?" I did it for all choices because I believed that NCBE will use similar fact pattern but make it different answer choice by adding/removing facts etc.

  4. I also used the BarMB best essay book, and before I write my essay, I would do the essay open book, copy the rule from that book, and eventually I will do it closed book.

I am just so excited and happy that I passed. I wished I used this goat bar prep last July.
