How to secure your channel

So it occurred to me that a lot of people neglect very basic security measures when managing their channels. Maybe I am stating the obvious, but please stop using your main email address to manage your channel. I mean the email you used to create the channel. If your computer gets infected with malware, you can lose your channel. You have probably seen those posts saying "My channel got hacked, google doesn't do anything, plz hlp" Nobody wants that, and you are the first person who should want to avoid it. Because it is usually too late at this point. I've seen even big youtubers making this mistake (Historia Militum losing their 300k+ channel and having to start from scratch is just one example from the top of my head).

The solution is so simple and obvious that I was very surprised to learn that a lot of people still don't do it. Stop using your main account to manage your channel. By main account, I mean the one you used to create the channel. Instead, create a separate email address, give it manager permissions, and use that account for day to day management. And never login into your main google account. Realistically, the only time you need to log into your main account is to remove manager permissions from your manager account if it gets compromised.

Malware usually works by stealing your browser cookies. A hacker can import those cookies into their own browser and instantly appear logged into your account. From there, they can take control of your channel. But if you are not logged into your creator account, those cookies are not there to steal. At worst, they get access to your manager account, which is not critical. You can always log into your original creator account and remove that compromised account’s permissions.

Of course, other measures still apply, such as not opening attachments or clicking links from suspicious emails. But the point is that no matter how cautious you are, you can still make a mistake, and one mistake is all hackers need.
