Hey yall, I've been seeing alot of rants about AI use on the kpop subreddits recently, and I wanted to point out a few things that people might not be aware of or taken the time to think about. I'd hate to see some of the rookie groups disbanded over false or misplaced accusations from the community, so PLEASE consider giving this a read.

  • Graphic Design/Lyrics/Music Production - Just because a group has AI generated content, does not mean it was created by the actual members or company staff. A company can easily hire someone with the intension to support an actual artist, only for that individual to turn to AI. That is not the group's fault.
  • Music Videos - There's a difference between AI and CGI. Just because something on screen isn't realistic, does not mean it's AI. Computer-generated Imagery is an art form all on it's own, created by a human through a computer program. This has been used in all forms of media for YEARS.
  • AI Capabilities - Now I personally have tried out a wide variation of AI programs, specifically to see what it's actually capable of, and yall... Most 'AI content' still requires an artist's touch to make it believable. At most, it's best used for reference and research
    • Lyrics - Typically lyrics generated by AI use the same imagery and phrasing over and over again. It takes HOURS of prompting just to get something that actually makes sense, and half that time is spent correcting the syllable count to the point where it's exhausting. By the time I was able to create a 'decent' song, I had rewritten half of it myself and wasted hours of my life.
    • Design - Most AI generated art is utter garbage. I'm sure there's a few impressive programs out there that I haven't tried, but the ones I used are horrible with proportions, can't follow prompts properly, or have very obvious tells. Even with the AI sytem in Adobe Photoshop, I had to use my own design skills just to make the AI content look believable.

Now I'm not going to deny the fact that some of the companies and the idols use AI. I'm also not condoning AI use in K-pop. However, I think we should take into consideration the level of involvement of idols, whether the content is actually AI or human error, and how capable AI actually is, before jumping to conclusions and throw shade. I think the idols deserve at least that much.
