Hi everyone,
I run a small-scale industrial control panel manufacturing business. We are looking to move away from manual Excel-based quoting and move into an ERP, but our workflow is a bit complex and I’m worried about "out-of-the-box" software fitting our needs.
Our Business Model: We build highly customized control panels for end users. Almost every order is a "one-off" project based on a specific client's technical requirements.
The Challenges & Concerns:
- "Disposable" BOQs: A single quotation might have 3-4 different panels, each with its own unique Bill of Materials (20–50+ components like MCBs, contactors, timers, and terminals). Since we may never build that exact panel again, I don’t want an ERP that forces me to create a "Master Product" for every variation and clutter my database.
- Massive Component Library: We work with hundreds of components across dozens of different brands (Schneider, Siemens, etc.). We need an ERP that lets us quickly pick these parts from a library to build a custom quote on the fly.
- Pricing Automation: I want the ERP to handle the "math." It should pull the latest component costs, let me add a custom labor charge, and apply a specific margin to generate the final price automatically.
- Professional Documentation: We need to generate multi-page technical quotations that list the full breakdown of components for each panel in the order.
- Small Team Practicality: We are a small team. If the ERP is too "heavy" or takes longer than Excel to build a quote, the team won't use it.
The Question: For those in custom manufacturing or systems integration:
- What ERP are you using that handles one-time BOQs effectively?
- Has anyone successfully used Odoo for this without the database getting messy?
- Is there a specific "Estimation" module or workflow you recommend for small-scale custom shops?
I'd appreciate any insights or "lessons learned" from those who have transitioned from Excel to an ERP in a similar industry.
