Greetings all, just had a weird package situation and trying to figure out what the angle might be. Any help is much appreciated!
Run down: late last week I received notice from UPS that they were attempting to deliver a package I had not ordered and required signature delivery confirmation. Since there was no other information available I figured I’d decide what to do when I actually got a look at it and more info.
UPS attempted delivery several more times but I wasn’t able to catch the driver (I swear they don’t even knock half the time…) so today I received the notice the item would be returned to sender and for the first time the notice actually had the name of the recipient on it which was my mother who has been deceased since 2022 but is still registered as property owner because she and my father were co owners.
I’m trying to figure out what kind of scam (if any) might be going on. The only other information I currently have is that the package originated from Mesquite, Texas and is described as a “package“ but I have no idea what the dimensions were.
What really concerns me is that there’s a decent chance they got their contact info from some sort of property records site or resource because my mother never lived at this address and the only mail she ever received here was deed/tax/insurance related. I did register with USPS to have her mail forwarded here but otherwise very few to zero entities have her name associated with this address.
Is there a legit explanation I’m missing? I’m taking steps tomorrow to get more information from UPS (there is absolutely no way for me to reroute or retrieve the package as UPS has initiated the return to sender process) and put any available protections on our property title/deed but it would be helpful to know if this is a known technique and therefore what to expect in terms of focusing efforts to prevent them from getting any further.
