⚔️ I made a wooden sword out of old wood and waste-materials.

So, a few days ago, I posted a "work in progress" post related to this sword and now I feel it's done.

For added context, I used to have an old worn out wooden sword I made from some furniture scrap I had when I was about 12 years old. (I am 24 now). For a very long time, I have been thinking of remodelling it. I'm not sure how to add the old picture along with the video here so just take my word for it haha.

HOW I MADE IT:

I used the already existing sword as the skeleton, that is the handle and The Blade. The vertical piece is one single structure while the horizontal quillon is a block of soft wood. I had to do some basic carpentry work with a hack saw, chisel and other tools which I do not know the names of. I applied the skills I had acquired in the past few months by watching carpentry YouTube shorts before bed.

I am not sure which kind of wood I used, since this is a DIY kind of project and I am not an expert in woods nor in carpentry. I mostly used materials available at home, making the best-out-of-waste kinda deal, while using some waterproofing tape to give some structure and volume to the blade.

I used an old belt to make the handle grip, split a female pin socket in half and stuck it on either side of the handle tip at the bottom to make it raised. I used some insulation tape, both black and white ones, to give some more colour variation as well as strength to the joints.

I drew various ancient runes to give it some mysterious feel, while not overdoing it. Yeah I know I am not very handy with artwork too, but I did what I could and in my opinion it looks workable.

For the final touches, I cut some diamonds from a red waxing Strip, because it had some texture and also because I could not find red paint anywhere in my house and I was too lazy to go out and buy some. I am still wondering if I can put something on either side of the horizontal piece, i.e. the quillon, to give it a more finished look. Maybe you guys can help me out.

If anyone has any suggestions for comments, I'd love to hear them.

Making a wooden sword (Work in progress)

I've have had a wooden sword for the past 12 years (Original picture attached). I made it with wooden scraps left after some furnishing at our home AND with zero carpentry knowledge (Though I'm still an amateur). To paint it, i just coated it with some paper tape and colored it with water color. I'm amazed it lived for so long. Yes, there were some cracks and chopping in the main body with a relatively weak hilt.

Cut to 2026: A few weeks ago, I decided to refurbish it and make it stronger and a bit stylish. Maybe someday I will pair it with a cosplay or something. I'm no DIY expert or something, so I used things available at home, some wood blocks and a crafty mind to give it this look. It's still work in progress and will look even better when finished. Will give you folks an update when I'm done.

(Last two pictures = the original design)
